Standing Strong Like a Fortified City

Have you ever herd a church say you don't need to believe to belong? or all are welcome in this place? Although true for most congregations there was always a guilty side of me feeling like an outcast not understanding the material being spoken in true context and disparate to just be part of a safe and friendly community of people.

It's both a blessing and it hurts to be at an age now where I truly understand God's word the do and don't and emotion behind the mistakes I have made along the way. For years I have been innocently practicing my faith in all the wrong ways. Today starts the beginning of a new series of Blog post share God's word in a way that I can only hope bring true context and rich meaningful understanding and practice to your life as well.

A Reflection on Jeremiah 1:18

In times of uncertainty, when challenges feel insurmountable, we often seek strength beyond our own capabilities. Jeremiah 1:18 offers a powerful reminder of God’s unwavering support:

“Today I have made you strong like a fortified city that cannot be captured, like an iron pillar or a bronze wall.”

These words were spoken by God to the prophet Jeremiah at a pivotal moment in his life. Called to be a prophet to the nations, Jeremiah was young, uncertain, and afraid. He faced rejection, opposition, and hardship, yet God reassured him that he was not alone. Instead, God made him strong—like a city fortified against attack, unshaken by external threats.

Strength Through God’s Calling

God’s promise to Jeremiah wasn’t about physical might or personal resilience alone—it was about divine empowerment. A fortified city stands not because of its walls, but because of the foundation on which it is built. Likewise, when we anchor ourselves in God, we are strengthened against adversity, criticism, and fear.

We may not all be called to be prophets, but we are each called to stand firm in our faith, our convictions, and our purpose. Just as Jeremiah was set apart, so too are we uniquely positioned to fulfill God’s will in our own lives. Whether we face difficulties at work, in relationships, or within ourselves, God equips us with the endurance to withstand the pressures around us.

Facing Opposition with Confidence

Jeremiah’s journey was not easy. He was ridiculed, imprisoned, and even threatened with death for speaking God’s truth. But despite everything, he remained steadfast because he knew that God had fortified him.

We, too, will encounter opposition in life—whether from people who misunderstand us, circumstances that challenge us, or doubts that creep into our minds. Yet Jeremiah 1:18 reminds us that God has already prepared us. Our faith acts as an unbreakable shield, our trust in Him as an immovable foundation.

Living as a Fortified City

So how can we apply this verse to our daily lives?

  1. Trust in God’s Strength – When you feel weak, remember that your strength comes from God, not just from within yourself.

  2. Stand Firm in Your Faith – Don’t waver in your beliefs or values, even when faced with opposition.

  3. Embrace Your Calling – Whatever God has placed on your heart, pursue it with confidence, knowing He has fortified you for the journey.

  4. Pray for Endurance – Ask God to strengthen your spirit, giving you the perseverance to withstand trials.

Jeremiah 1:18 is more than just a verse—it’s a declaration of how God empowers His people. When we rely on Him, we become like that fortified city, unyielding and unshakable. No matter what comes our way, we can stand firm, knowing that God Himself is our strength and foundation.
